The turnoff for Boss Lake Trail is located almost directly across from the Monarch Lodge on Highway 50, in the state of Colorado, United States. From Salida, take US Hwy 50 West toward Monarch Pass. At approximately mile 13, turn right on to Forest Road 230 (just west of Garfield). Follow FR 230 for 1.5 miles to Boss Lake Trailhead. FR 230 is on your right near the Monarch Ski Tours Office and just past the Monarch Mountain Lodge. The trail to Boss lake starts on the left of the Trailhead sign NOT the right dont make the mistake I did and hike an extra couple miles to view and abandon mine.
Boss Lake is heavily stocked with Greenback Cutthroats and is good fishing for 8-12" native greenback cutthroats which are more then willing to take a dry fly. Boss Lake is also a Catch and Release, Fly and Lure only lake. The road to the trailhead requires 4wd with high clearance. Boss Lake is at Latitude: 38.5588856 and Longitude: -106.320024 with an elevation of 10,866 ft.
Flies I have had success with at this lake include hopper patterns, ants, stimulators, wooly buggers and copper johns. I did not use any spinners at this lake but imagine the black or yellow panther martins would work well. I would also give kastmaster's a try.
