The most common route to Hartenstein Lake is via the Denny Creek Trail. At the Denny Creek Trailhead on Chaffee County Road 306 (Cottonwood Pass Road) it is a 2.5 mile hike uphill to the lake. The hike is almost up hill the whole way. I did it early in the season carrying a 60lb pack it smoked me as I was still pretty out of shape to be hiking at that elevation with that heavy of a pack. The signs to the lake are well marked and is a easy trail to follow.
Hartenstein Lake is very good for cutthroats and brook trout. The small beaver ponds at the outlet of the lake also hold some very aggressive brook trout. Cottonwood Pass is a paved road and any car can make it to this trailhead. Hartenstein Lake is at Latitude: 38°49'45.78"N and Longitude: 106°21'54.54"W with an elevation of 11,451 ft.
Flies I have had success with at this lake include hopper patterns, ants, stimulators, wooly buggers and copper johns. I did not use any spinners at this lake but imagine the black or yellow panther martins would work well. I would also give kastmaster's a try.
